The traditional company was founded thanks to an ingenious business idea by Nuremberg merchant Emil Otto Schmidt. He had unexpectedly received a wagonload of gingerbread from his brother, which he packaged into assortments and advertised in the local newspaper. The practical packages were sent directly to customers' homes upon request. Thus, one of the first German department stores was born – with great success! Thirty years later, Schmidt discovered another clever sales channel. He rented ice cream parlours that were empty during the winter to promote his Nuremberg speciality. Today, there are around 150 such ‘seasonal shops’ throughout Germany.
